We believe that better living starts with a BetterPAD

Welcome to BetterPAD! We are a chartered architecture practice that specialises in small home extensions and renovations, and since our founding in 2018 have helped over 50 homeowners.

We aim to massively simplify the traditional architecture process, whilst offering vastly superior quality and creativity compared to a non architect-led alternative. We're passionate about design, and helping people get the most out of their house to promote a happy and healthy lifestyle.

What we do...

Ground Extensions

More space, create open plan living, and enhance the connection to the garden.

Loft Conversions

Add a new bedroom, bathroom, or perhaps a playroom or office?

Internal Refurbs

Modernise the existing property to reflect a modern style and way of living.

Garden Structures

Close to the house but not connected, these structures are becoming very popular!

We design for wellness

Our design process is informed by the principles of wellness; air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind. By focusing on beautiful and functional design that promotes health and longevity, we are able to bring a little more balance into your life.

How It Works

Our services are presented across three phases, and each has a ‘core’ and a ‘premium’ version allowing you flexibility over what level of service to invest in. These packs have been tweaked and refined over time, and offer a comprehensive process from developing an initial idea into a set of instructions for the builder.

Discover the potential adaptation of your property via 2-3 proposals that respond to the brief we have been given.

We translate the agreed design into a planning application and seek planning permission or a 'certificate of lawful development' from the local council.

It's time to carry out the technical development of the design, into a set of technical documents that builders can use to prepare a quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Do you visit in person?

Within the project type that we specialise in and have built our business around, we don't believe it is essential to visit the property in person to carry out our work. We understand however that many of our clients would prefer to have face to face contact and so we offer this an an optional upgrade.

Do you design the interiors?

Within our Discovery pack, we show both fixed elements, such as the kitchen and bathroom(s), and an indication of loose furnishings so you can understand what can fit within the space. Within the optional upgrade of the Tender pack, we discuss the interior finishing in more depth, and will produce mood boards and product suggestions of the fixed elements, such as finishes, appliances and sanitary ware, to help you decide what is best. This isn't intended to be a full interior design service, and also does not extend to the loose furnishings, such as tables, chairs, sofas and rugs etc.

Do you project manage?

Whist various parts of our services have a management aspect to them, we don't provide project management services in the way this term is understood within the industry. We are therefore not suitable candidates for people looking to be completely hands off, but rather are positioned perfectly for people who want to be hands on whist benefiting from creative and technical experts along the way.

Do you build the project?

No, as an architecture firm we offer in independent design service and do not directly carry out any building work, or are affiliated with any builders. In line with our aim to be more simplified and affordable than a traditional architecture service, we do not provide a formal role on site, however are available to assist on an ad hoc basis if required.

Can you suggest people for the 'other consultants' that will be required for the project?

Yes, we have a great network of professionals that we have worked with many times and can arrange for a quotation when required. Please note that as an RIBA chartered firm we are forbidden from any sort of financial commission, and so these are purely recommendations to help you and the project, and we have no other motivation for putting forward these candidates. Whist there is value in appointing the various people, collectively know as the 'design team' who have worked together previously, it is completely up to you and we are more than happy to work with anyone of your choosing as long as they carry out the work required (we will provide you with a simple briefing document).

What our clients say

Cranley Gardens6903_2.jpg

"BetterPad have been brilliant to work with on a complete house refurbishment - total strip out, rear extension and loft conversion.

We're mid-build now but I would highly recommend them for their focus, professionalism and innovative approach to the industry of working with architects on home improvement"

- Anna Higgs, Cranley Gardens

129 Kingsway, East Sheen, London SW14 7H

"Friendly, helpful and a joy to work with. It was the first time we did work to a house and Paul and his team made it all easy and straightforward, would highly recommend."

- Olivia Matthews, Kingsway

"Once we decide to go ahead with a renovation, Paul spent several hours understanding what we were looking for and what was important to us. Paul had great suggestions along the way and was able to take our poorly articulated ideas and somehow perfectly turn them into amazing 3D computer images to be able to visualise what the end result would look like."

- Ryan Duffy, Rylett Crescent

33A Rokeby Gardens, Woodford Green IG8 9

"Paul and his team are first rate, whilst never failing to be extremely helpful and innovative at every stage. We'd met other architects for our project, but they really stood out from the crowd. We're well informed, with great visuals as we proceed"

- Ammanda Simmons, Rokeby Gardens
